TIt was reported this morning that former Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) died on the age of 74 after battling most cancers for a few years. Akin grew up within the St. Louis space and graduated from John Burroughs Excessive College. He obtained a bachelor’s diploma in administration engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts in 1970.
Akin served within the Military Nationwide Guard and the U.S. Military Reserve from 1972 to 1980. He obtained a grasp’s diploma in theology from Covenant Theological Seminary in 1984. He married Luli Boe in 1975 and so they have six kids. Akin was a rock-ribbed conservative, who served within the Missouri Home of Representatives from 1989 to 2001. In 2000, he was elected to Congress, representing Missouri’s 2nd District from 2001 to 2013.
In 2012, Akin challenged Claire McCaskill (D-MO) to the U.S. Senate. That summer season, I used to be lucky to take part within the Republican main election debate, which consolidated my help for Akin. He’s unapologetically conservative and isn’t afraid to go towards the celebration line, particularly on monetary points. Then got here the horrible, unhealthy, and really unhealthy “authorized rape” feedback, which undoubtedly ruined his Senate marketing campaign (and made Claire McCaskill scream).
For these of us who had been energetic within the Tea Social gathering/grassroots motion on the time, the collateral injury of Ahkin’s downfall (and different promising Republican candidates reminiscent of Richard Murdoch in Indiana) was devastating. Blow. And, personally, as a fledgling political blogger who deliberate to interview Akin the day after the “authorized rape” story broke out (unsurprisingly, his marketing campaign cancelled the interview) a blow of disappointment.
Though I’ve had the chance to satisfy him many instances, I can’t say that I do know Todd Akin very nicely. However in accordance with all those that did this, he was a form and first rate individual and a principled civil servant. Regrettably, most experiences on his dying targeted on/will concentrate on an unlucky (undeniably, very unlucky) remark, quite than recognizing the complete normal of a cheerful life.
