Denmark to join diplomatic boycott of Beijing Olympics over human rights

COPENHAGEN (REUTERS) – Denmark is not going to ship an official diplomatic delegation to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics due to human rights points within the host nation, International Minister Jeppe Kofod mentioned on Friday (Jan 14).

“It’s no secret that we from the Danish facet are very involved concerning the human rights state of affairs in China,” Kofod mentioned.

“The federal government has determined that we’ll not attend the Winter Olympics in China.”

The choice comes after EU nations failed to agree a typical stance at a gathering in Brest this week.

A US boycott to protest towards China’s human rights report has been joined by Australia, Britain, Canada and Japan.

The Netherlands may also not ship an official diplomatic delegation to the Olympics as a result of of Covid-19 restrictions, a international ministry spokesman mentioned earlier on Friday.

China denies rights abuses and has condemned the boycott as betraying Olympic rules.
